Majakivi Boulder

Majakivi, the house stone, is a granite erratic on the Juminda peninsula standing around seven metres high with a circumference of about fifty, one of the largest boulders in Estonia, carried here from Finland by the ice sheet and dropped when it melted. The Lahemaa coast is full of such erratics but this is the outstanding one. It sits in wet forest and bog, reached by a marked trail of about three kilometres from the road that runs on boardwalk over the mire and through the trees, passing the Pikanomme bog and a viewing point. Stairs cut into the boulder allow climbing to the top, which is flat enough to stand on.

What you actually see

When to go

May to October for the trail; the boardwalk is slippery with frost and the bog is wet in spring. Autumn colours the bog. Mosquitoes are severe in June and July.

Honest expectations

The trail is around three kilometres each way with no shortcuts. Boardwalks are slippery when wet or frosty. Mosquitoes in the bog forest are severe in summer. There are no facilities at the boulder.
