Baltic Ice Roads

In a proper winter, Estonia opens public roads across the frozen sea. The longest, from Rohuküla on the mainland to Heltermaa on Hiiumaa, runs around 25 kilometres over the ice - the longest official ice road in Europe - and there are shorter crossings to Vormsi, Kihnu and between the islands. They are real state roads, marked with juniper branches and signs, with rules of their own.

What you actually see

• The ploughed lane - a white track running out from the shore until the land disappears.
• The markers - posts and brushwood set along both edges of the route.
• The scale - other cars far ahead as dots, closer to crossing a frozen desert than to driving a road.
• The rules - seatbelts off, doors ready, speeds under 25 or between 40 and 70 to avoid resonance in the ice, big gaps between cars, no driving in darkness.

When to go

February to early March, if at all: the ice needs sustained hard frost, and the roads open days or weeks at a time. Not every year delivers them, and recent warm winters have kept them shut entirely for several seasons in a row.

Honest expectations

You cannot plan a trip around an ice road. They open when the ice allows and close without much notice, and the official channels are the only source worth trusting - social media reports lag reality dangerously.

When they are open, they are safe by design and heavily monitored. Driving onto sea ice anywhere outside a declared road is a different activity with a body count.

The Rohuküla crossings start near Haapsalu. If the ice year fails, the ferries run all winter and the islands are the same at the far end.
