Elistvere keeps native Estonian species in large wooded enclosures in the grounds of a former manor in Vooremaa: brown bear, lynx, wolf, elk, roe and red deer, wild boar, fox and raccoon dog, along with owls and other birds. Most of the animals came in as orphans, injured or confiscated and cannot be returned to the wild, which is the park's stated basis. Paths run between the enclosures through forest, with feeding times posted. It is run in connection with the state forest agency and is used heavily for school visits and by families from Tartu. The manor buildings and the surrounding drumlin landscape complete the setting.

What you actually see

  • Bear and lynx - the large carnivores in their forest enclosures.
  • Elk and deer - the native ungulates in the park.
  • Owls and birds - the raptor and owl enclosures.
  • The manor grounds - the estate setting the park occupies.

When to go

May to September for the fullest experience; the park is open year round but animals are less active and some paths difficult in winter. Feeding times draw the animals out. Weekends and school holidays are busy.

Honest expectations

These are captive animals in enclosures, not wildlife viewing. Some enclosures are smaller than visitors expect. Bears hibernate and are not visible in winter. Facilities are a kiosk and picnic area.

Nearby

The Ice Age Centre is close; Tartu lies south.
