Piedra Bere

Piedra Bere stands not far from Piedra Nzas in the interior of Río Muni, another granite inselberg breaking out of the forest canopy, and the two are usually treated together as a single protected area. Bere is the larger of the pair. Bare rock covers most of it with vegetation only in the cracks, and the walk in from the road passes through village land and cocoa gardens. Inselbergs like these carry their own plant communities, with species growing in the rock crevices that are not found in the surrounding forest.

When to go

December to February is the drier season. Wet rock makes the climb dangerous. The long rains make access difficult.

The rock is slippery when wet and the climb has no fixed protection. Access crosses village land and needs permission and a guide. There are no facilities.
