Agua Blanca

Agua Blanca is a village of a few hundred people inside Machalilla national park, living on a site occupied by the Manteno culture from roughly 800 CE until the Spanish arrival, and the community runs the visit itself: a small museum of urns, stone seats and figurines excavated nearby, a guided walk through dry forest past house foundations and ceremonial platforms, and a sulphur lagoon where visitors coat themselves in the mineral mud and wash off in the water. The guides are community members who explain both the archaeology and the plants of the dry forest. Horses can be hired for longer routes, and simple lodging lets visitors stay overnight in the village.

When to go

June to September for cooler walking, December to April for sun and heat. Half a day. Guides are compulsory and included in the fee. Mornings avoid the worst heat.

Before you go

The archaeology is low foundations and museum objects rather than standing ruins; the guiding carries it. The lagoon smells strongly of sulphur and is muddy, not scenic. The track in is rough and dusty.
