The Jima river drops through a succession of falls and pools on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Central near Bonao, with several drops of a few metres each linked by stretches of smooth rock, and the site is set up simply with a path down and platforms beside the water. The pools are deep enough to swim in and cold. The setting is forested hill country and the site sees mostly Dominican visitors. A path continues above the highest of the falls to quieter stretches of the river where the rock flattens out and the water runs shallow.

What you actually see

  • The chain of falls - several drops of a few metres linked along the river.
  • The pools - deep cold basins between the falls.
  • The smooth rock - the worn stone along the river between the drops.
  • The forest - the wooded hills the river runs through.

When to go

November to April is drier and safer. Rain raises the river fast. Weekends bring local families.

Honest expectations

The river rises quickly after mountain rain and becomes dangerous. Paths and steps are slippery. Facilities are basic and often closed on weekdays.

Nearby

Bonao is nearby, and Jarabacoa is northwest.
