Casa de Ponce de León

Juan Ponce de León governed this eastern province before sailing on to Puerto Rico and then Florida, and around 1505 he had a house built here in stone, two storeys with thick walls, arrow slits and a defensible ground floor, more a small fortress than a residence. It survives largely intact in open country outside the village of San Rafael del Yuma, restored in the 1970s and furnished with period pieces, weapons and armour to suggest how it was used. It is among the oldest European domestic buildings anywhere in the Americas and it is almost never busy: most visitors have the place and the caretaker's commentary to themselves.

When to go

November to April is drier. It keeps limited hours and closes for lunch, so mid-morning is safest. It takes about forty minutes, so it pairs naturally with Boca de Yuma or the Cotubanamá park trails.

Good to know

It is small and takes under an hour, and interpretation is limited to what the caretaker tells you, in Spanish. The furnishings are a suggestion of the period rather than original to the house. Opening hours are unreliable. There is nothing else in the village.
