Tisvilde Hegn

Tisvilde Hegn covers about twelve square kilometres of the north Zealand coast, and it exists because sand once buried the farmland here. From the eighteenth century the drift was fought by planting marram and then pine, and the forest that grew on the dunes is still shaped by it: bare sand hollows between the trees and, near the sea, a stand of low contorted pines that locals call Troldeskoven, the troll wood. Paths and forest roads run through to the beach at Tisvildeleje, where the Kattegat laps a long stretch of sand. The train from Hillerod ends at the edge of the trees, which makes this an easy day from Copenhagen without a car.

What you actually see

• Troldeskoven - stunted pines twisted into strange shapes by salt wind near the shore.
• The sand hollows - open dune ground still visible between the plantations.
• Tisvildeleje beach - a long Kattegat beach at the northern edge of the forest.
• The forest tracks - flat gravel routes good for running and cycling.

When to go

Late spring through early autumn; the beach fills on hot July weekends, when half of Copenhagen seems to arrive on the same train. Autumn colour and empty paths make October a good choice. Winter walking is fine, but the days are short and the wind off the coast is genuinely cold.

Honest expectations

The forest is pleasant rather than dramatic and looks much the same for long stretches, so a map or a plan helps. Sandy paths make cycling harder than the flat profile suggests. Parking near Tisvildeleje is limited and charged in season, and the beach has few facilities. Ticks are common in the undergrowth from spring onwards.
