Gilleleje
A working fishing port at Zealand's northern tip, with smokehouses on the quay, thatched lanes and a clifftop walk.

Gilleleje is the northernmost town on Zealand and remains a working fishing harbour, with boats landing daily, smokehouses along the quay and fish sold direct, alongside the summer trade. Behind the harbour are lanes of low thatched and tiled cottages. The clifftop walk west and the harbour front are the main reasons to come.
History
The name joins the archaic Danish gil, a cleft, with leje, a place where fishermen came to fish in season; villages ending in -leje often date from the 16th century, when seasonal fishermen began to settle. A house found under the sand by the town museum in 1979 was probably built shortly after 1536, judging by a coin of 1534-36, and around this time the village could afford its own church and priest, a sign that the fishermen had settled for good around 1500; the town uses 1488 as its official founding year, and the church was inaugurated in 1538. A tax list of 1588 from the vassal of Kronborg names about 70 households, each paying a barrel or half a barrel of cod. Too many fishermen strained the fishing, and by 1632 only 18 families were left, rising to 30 by 1682, while shifting sand buried boats and nets and even some houses on the eastern side of the town (Wikipedia, Gilleleje).

When to go
May to September for the harbour at its liveliest and the coastal walks. Half a day. The fish stalls are best in the morning when the boats come in. Winter is quiet with limited opening.
Things to know
The harbour is a working one and parts are industrial rather than picturesque. Summer weekends crowd the quay restaurants. The museum keeps limited hours out of season. There is no beach in the town itself; the sand is further west.
Nearby
Hornbaek is east along the coast; the Rudolph Tegner Museum is a short drive.
