Skagen and Grenen

At Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark, the North Sea and the Baltic meet head on, and you can stand with a foot in each as their waves clash on a narrow sandspit. Behind it, Skagen is a town of yellow houses and famous clear light that drew a whole colony of painters in the nineteenth century.

Summer for the beaches, the light and the full town; it is a popular Danish summer resort. The clashing seas are visible year-round, strongest in wind.

Things to know

Skagen is a fashionable summer town, so it is busy and pricey in July and August. Reaching the very tip means a walk along the sand or a ride on the sand tractor. The colliding seas are a subtle sight best in a breeze.

The migrating Rabjerg Mile dune and the buried church are nearby; the Jutland coast runs south.
