Cape Emine

Cape Emine is where the Stara Planina, the range that runs the whole width of Bulgaria, finally reaches the Black Sea and stops, and it is the eastern terminus of the Kom to Emine trail, the long-distance route that follows the ridge for around six hundred kilometres from the Serbian border. There is a lighthouse on the point, the ruins of a medieval monastery and fortress, and cliffs with the sea on three sides. The village of Emona above it is small and quiet. For walkers who have done the traverse the cape is the finish line and there is a marker to that effect; for everyone else it is a headland with a long view up and down the coast and a good deal of wind.

• The Kom to Emine finish - the terminus of the six-hundred-kilometre route.
• The lighthouse on the point - the working light at the cape.
• Medieval ruins - monastery and fortress remains on the headland.

When to go

April to October. Half a day. The lighthouse is a working installation and not open. Autumn brings migration along the coast. It is exposed and windy in any season.

Honest expectations

There is very little at the cape itself: a lighthouse you cannot enter, some ruins and a view. Access is a rough track and a walk. There is no shade or shelter. Emona has almost no facilities.

Nearby

Nesebar and Sunny Beach lie south; the Kom to Emine trail runs west.
