Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca is where the continent runs out: the westernmost point of mainland Europe, a windswept headland of cliffs standing roughly 140 metres over the open Atlantic, crowned by a lighthouse whose service dates to 1772 - among the oldest on the Portuguese coast. A stone monument carries the line every visitor comes to read, Camoes' declaration that here, 'where the land ends and the sea begins', and the certificate kiosk will document your westernmost standing for a fee. The setting outperforms the ceremony: wild headland vegetation flattened by wind, trails running north and south along the Sintra-Cascais coast toward hidden beaches like Praia da Ursa below its sea stacks, and sunsets that drop the sun into open ocean with nothing between here and America.

History

Before you go

The wind is serious and the cliff edges are unfenced beyond the barriers - people ignoring them for photos take real risks. It is a stop, not a destination - an hour suffices unless you walk the coastal trails. Summer tour buses stack up mid-afternoon.
