Mons Klint

Mons Klint is a six-kilometre wall of brilliant white chalk rising over a hundred metres straight from a turquoise sea, the most dramatic stretch of natural coast in famously flat Denmark. Formed of ancient sea-floor chalk, streaked with flint and topped with beech forest, its cliffs and fossil-strewn beach are a striking surprise.

Background

The chalk is built from the shells of millions of microscopic coccolithophores that lived on the sea floor over 70 million years ago, and the cliffs came into view as the ice melted about 11,000 years ago, when the last ice age ended. Some faces drop a sheer 120 m, and the highest, Dronningestolen, reaches 128 m above sea level. Erosion keeps changing them. The Sommerspiret fell away in 1998, and a landslide near Store Taler in January 2007 created a 300-m long spit of chalk and fallen trees. The GeoCenter, designed by PLH Architects, opened on 29 May 2007, and on 13 July 2025 the cliffs were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

When to go

The warm months for the beach, the steps and clear light on the chalk; the cliffs are green-topped and lovely in summer. Storms occasionally cause cliff falls, changing the shore.

Practical notes

Reaching the beach means many steps down and back up, a real climb. The cliffs erode and occasionally collapse, so heed warnings and keep back from the edge above and the base below. It is a fair drive from Copenhagen for a half-day sight.

The island of Mon with its dark-sky reserve and Stege town are around; Stevns Klint lies across the water.
