Dodekalitten

Dodekalitten is an art project begun in 2011 on a hill above the water on northern Lolland: twelve granite monoliths, each around nine metres high and weighing tens of tonnes, set in a ring, with faces and figures being carved into the tops of them one at a time by sculptors over a period of years, so the work is deliberately unfinished and visitors see stones at every stage from raw block to completed head. A sound installation plays through the site, composed for it, giving the ring an atmosphere that visitors either find moving or find overdone. It stands in open ground with views over the Smalandsfarvandet, and it is free and unstaffed, funded by donations and volunteers.

When to go

April to October for comfortable visiting; the site is open at all hours year round since it is unfenced. One to two hours. Evening light and quiet suit it best. Carving work happens in summer and is worth timing for.

Good to know

It is unfinished and will be for years, which some visitors find disappointing. The sound installation is not to everyone's taste and cannot be switched off. There are no facilities, no shelter and limited parking. It is a long drive to reach for what is one artwork.
