Moravska Trebova
A town with the earliest Renaissance gateway north of the Alps, dated 1492, in a chateau courtyard.

The chateau at Moravska Trebova holds a piece of architectural history: the portal built in 1492 for Ladislav of Boskovice, an Italian Renaissance gateway with pilasters, medallions and a correctly handled classical vocabulary, which is generally identified as the earliest Renaissance work north of the Alps - earlier than anything in the German lands or in Poland. Ladislav had studied in Italy and brought the idiom back directly. The chateau around it was later remodelled with an arcaded courtyard. The town square is arcaded with a Renaissance town hall and sgraffito facades, and the museum holds an Egyptian collection with a mummy brought back in the nineteenth century. Above the town is a Calvary route to a pilgrimage chapel. The place is off the main routes and receives very few foreign visitors given what the portal is.
History
Moravská Třebová was founded around 1257 by Boreš of Rýzmburk as a typical colonisation town. Its greatest flowering came under the Lords of Boskovice and Ladislav Velen of Zierotin between 1486 and 1622, when the town was a centre of humanist scholarship and earned the nickname "Moravian Athens"; its castle is one of the oldest Renaissance buildings in the country. Fires in 1840 and 1844 badly damaged the town, destroying part of the castle and the Renaissance facades of the houses. The town was shaped largely by the textile industry, and between 1850 and 1960 it was a district town (Wikipedia, Moravská Třebová).
