Milotice Chateau

Milotice was rebuilt in the 1720s for the Serenyi family on the site of a moated fortress, and what makes it unusual is that the whole ensemble survives as one thing: the house, the forecourt with its flanking buildings, the riding hall and stables, the orangery, the sala terrena and the French garden with its parterres and hedged walks were all designed together and none of it was replaced later, so the composition reads as intended. That completeness is why it is regularly called the pearl of Moravian chateaux. The interiors have frescoes and stucco of the 1720s and 1730s and furnishing of several later periods. Costume tours in eighteenth-century dress are run in season, which the chateau leans on. The village is in the Kyjov part of Slovacko, so the folk tradition around it is strong and the wine is local.
