La Gran Piedra

La Gran Piedra is a single block of volcanic rock sitting on a ridge at around eleven hundred metres in the Sierra Maestra foothills east of Santiago, reached by a stair of about four hundred and fifty steps from the road. On a clear day the view runs over the Caribbean and, it is claimed locally, as far as Haiti and Jamaica, which is optimistic. The same road passes La Isabelica, a restored nineteenth-century coffee estate that is part of the World Heritage landscape of the first coffee plantations of southeastern Cuba.

The landscape

• The rock - a vast volcanic block on the ridge, reached by around four hundred and fifty steps.
• The view - the Caribbean coast and the Sierra Maestra from the top, on a clear morning.
• La Isabelica - a restored coffee estate house and drying terraces, part of the inscribed landscape.
• The cloud forest - tree ferns and epiphytes along the ridge road, quite different from the coast below.

When to go

November to April is drier, and early morning gives the only reliable chance of a clear view; cloud usually closes in by mid-morning. The ridge is noticeably cooler than Santiago, which is part of why the coffee estates were built here.

Good to know

Cloud beats the view more often than not, and arriving late in the day usually means seeing nothing. The claim that Haiti and Jamaica are visible is repeated everywhere and is not credible. The road up is steep and rough, and the steps are a genuine climb.
