Medvednica is the wooded ridge that closes off Zagreb to the north, and Sljeme, its high point at just over a thousand metres, is close enough to the city that trams reach the foot of it. A gondola runs up from Dolje, replacing an older line, and dozens of marked paths climb through beech forest from the northern suburbs. Near the top there is a lookout tower, a ski slope used for a World Cup race each January, and mountain huts serving walkers. Lower down, Veternica is one of the longest caves in the country, open for guided visits, and the restored Medvedgrad fortress stands on a spur with the city spread out below it.
What you actually see
- The Sljeme gondola - a cable line from the northern edge of Zagreb to the summit ridge in about twenty minutes.
- Veternica cave - a long horizontal cave on the southern slope, shown on guided tours in season.
- Medvedgrad - a thirteenth century fortress restored on a spur, with a direct view over the city.
- The beech forest trails - a dense network of marked paths used year round by people from the city.
When to go
Usable all year. Spring and autumn are best for walking, with the forest at its most striking in October. Winter brings snow and a working ski slope but also fog that can sit on the ridge for days. Weekends are busy with local walkers; a weekday morning has the trails largely to yourself.
Honest expectations
The summit itself is cluttered with masts and buildings, and the view is often blocked by trees or haze over the city. The gondola has had operating interruptions and closes in high wind. Veternica opens only on limited days. Zagreb smog can sit below the ridge, which is atmospheric from above but means little visibility. Facilities at the top are basic.
Nearby
Zagreb's upper town is half an hour away by tram, and Maksimir park lies on the eastern side of the city.
