Komiza

Komiza faces west on the far side of Vis, the outermost inhabited island of central Dalmatia, and its fishermen worked the grounds around Palagruza far out towards Italy. The boat they used was the falkusa: a gajeta with removable washboards raised for the open crossing and taken off for fishing, sailed hard because the first boats to reach the grounds took the best positions, which turned the passage into an annual race. The fishing museum in the Venetian tower on the harbour covers the type, and rebuilt falkuse sail from here. The town behind is tight stone lanes climbing steeply from the water.

May to September; ferries are thin in winter. Half a day.

Practical notes

Vis is a long ferry from Split and day trips are tight. The town is busy in July and August. Parking is difficult and mostly above the town. The museum keeps seasonal hours.
