Garic Castle

Garic was built in the thirteenth century on a ridge in the Moslavacka Gora, a royal and then noble castle controlling the hills between the Sava and the Ilova, with a keep, a chapel and a walled bailey. The Ottomans took it in the sixteenth century and it was abandoned soon after; the forest closed over it and it stayed that way until archaeological work from the 1960s onward cleared and consolidated the walls. What is there now is a legible ruin in beech woods, reached by a marked path, with interpretation boards - a considerable improvement on most castle ruins in the region, which are still under scrub.

• A thirteenth century hill castle - keep, chapel and walled bailey.
• Abandoned after the Ottoman capture - and swallowed by forest.
• Excavated from the 1960s - cleared and consolidated since.
• A legible ruin with boards - better presented than most in the region.

When to go

April to October; the woods are muddy in winter. Three hours.

Honest expectations

The walk in is on forest tracks and takes half an hour each way. There are no facilities at the site. Ticks are a real consideration. In summer the trees hide most of the view from the ridge.
