Dolac Market

Dolac opened in 1930 on a terrace cut into the slope between the lower town and the upper town, replacing the scattered markets that had worked on the streets before, and it has run every morning since. The open upper level with its red umbrellas is for fruit and vegetables, much of it brought in by growers from the villages around Zagreb; the covered level below holds meat, dairy and fish, with the fish hall at one end. The kumice, the women who came in from the countryside to sell, are commemorated by a bronze figure at the entrance. Trading finishes around midday and the place empties.

Honest expectations

Arriving after midday means finding it packed up. Prices in the most visible stalls are higher than in the back rows. Cash is easier than cards. It is genuinely busy on Saturday mornings.
