Baska

Baska sits at the southern end of Krk with a beach of pale shingle running nearly two kilometres under bare stone slopes, which is the reason most people come. The other reason is a slab: the Baska tablet, carved around 1100 in the church of St Lucy at Jurandvor just inland, is written in Glagolitic and records a donation by King Zvonimir - it is the oldest substantial text naming a Croatian king in the Croatian language, and it is treated as a founding document of Croatian literacy. The original is in the academy in Zagreb; a copy stands in the church where it was found.

Before you go

The beach is packed in July and August and parking is a real problem. The bura wind can shut the beach and the roads. The tablet itself is not here - what is in the church is a replica. Shingle needs footwear.
