The Coelacanth at the CNDRS

The coelacanth was known from fossils and presumed extinct for tens of millions of years until a trawler hauled one up off South Africa in 1938 - and the hunt for its home waters ended here: the deep volcanic slopes of the Comoros proved the stronghold of the species Comorians had long known as gombessa, an occasional deep-line bycatch. At the CNDRS - the national research and documentation centre in Moroni, whose museum opened in 1989 - a preserved gombessa floats in its tank, blue-grey, thick-finned and unmistakably ancient, alongside exhibits on the islands' volcanism, culture and history. It is the closest most humans will come to a lobe-finned relative from before the dinosaurs.

What to expect

This is a modest national museum, not a polished natural-history palace: labelling is thin and mostly French, lighting dim, and the building tired - the specimen itself supplies the awe. Staff, when free, add generous context. Photography rules vary by room; ask first.
