Singani Lava Flow

South of Moroni the coast road crosses a black lava flow from Karthala that ran down the western flank and into the sea at Singani, a field of jagged basalt with the surface textures of the flow preserved: ropy folds, blocks and channels. The road was cut through it. It is the most accessible place on the island to walk on recent lava and see what the volcano does to the coast.

What you actually see

When to go

May to October is the drier and cooler season. The rock is there year round. Midday heat on black lava is severe.

Honest expectations

The rock is sharp and uneven and shoes are essential. There is no path, signage or facility. Black basalt gets extremely hot in the middle of the day.
