Popayan Historic Centre

Popayan was founded in 1537 and grew rich on the gold and cattle of the surrounding province, which is why a small city has so many substantial churches and two-storey courtyard houses. An earthquake in 1983 brought much of it down, and it was rebuilt to the same plan and the same rule of whitewashed walls, so the centre reads as uniform rather than restored piecemeal. The Puente del Humilladero, a line of brick arches from the 1870s, carries a footpath down into the lower town. La Ermita is the oldest church and the plainest. The local kitchen is distinctive, built on empanadas de pipian, carantanta and champus.

When to go

December to March is the driest window. Holy Week is the city's biggest event and fills every bed months ahead at doubled prices, so decide early whether you want that or not. Days are mild and nights cool at this altitude. Churches open around service times rather than to a visitor schedule, and several close through the middle of the day.

Honest expectations

The centre is small and can be walked in half a day. Outside Holy Week this is a quiet provincial city with little in the way of evening life, and travellers often find a night is enough. Several churches keep short and unpredictable hours. The whitewash goes grey in the rains. Road connections east and south are slow mountain routes measured in hours, not kilometres.
