Salamanca Old Town

Salamanca glows: its monuments are cut from Villamayor sandstone that ages to honey and gold, and sunset turns the whole UNESCO-listed old town - inscribed in 1988 - into lit amber. This is Spain's great university city, its founding charter dating to 1218, the oldest in the country, and the scholarly centuries built extravagantly: the university's plateresque facade is carved to filigree density, with generations of visitors hunting the tiny frog perched on a skull among the carvings for luck. The 18th-century Plaza Mayor, arcaded on all sides and widely counted among Spain's most beautiful squares, works as the town's living room from breakfast to midnight, while the joined old and new cathedrals stack Romanesque through Baroque, and the Casa de las Conchas armours its walls with carved scallop shells. Student energy keeps the golden stones from ever feeling like a museum.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the kind seasons on the meseta - summer bakes and winter bites at this altitude. Stay for dusk: the sandstone's golden hour is the town's defining performance, and the plaza after dark belongs to everyone.

Honest expectations

Salamanca sits a good hour and a half from Madrid even by the fastest train, so day-tripping shortchanges it - the evening glow and student nightlife are the point of staying. Ticketed sights add up if you do them all; the streets themselves cost nothing and carry most of the magic. Finding the facade frog unaided is genuinely hard.
