Thundercliff Cave

Thundercliff is a limestone cave on the east coast entered by abseiling down the cliff face, and inside it opens into chambers with clear freshwater pools deep enough to swim in, stalactites overhead and the sound of the sea coming through the rock, which is where the name comes from. It cannot be visited independently: a permit and a guide with the equipment are required. The cave runs a considerable distance back into the cliff and the far chambers are dark throughout.

What you actually see

• The rope entry - the abseil down the cliff to the cave mouth.
• The freshwater pools - clear water inside the chambers.
• The formations - stalactites and flowstone through the cave.
• The sound - the sea working the rock beyond the walls.

When to go

May to November is the dry season and access is most reliable. Water levels inside change with the rains. Guided trips run on demand.

Honest expectations

You cannot do this on your own: it needs a permit, a guide and rope equipment. The abseil is not suitable for everyone. Trips are limited and must be arranged well ahead.
