The Laja drops about 35 metres over a basalt lip in four separate falls arranged around a horseshoe, immediately beside the main north-south highway, which makes it one of the few major waterfalls in Chile that requires no walking at all. Flow varies enormously: in the wet season and after snowmelt it is a wide brown torrent, and in a dry late summer - which central Chile has had a run of - it can thin to a fraction of that, exposing the rock. Paths and viewpoints run around the rim and down towards the base, with hotels and stalls that have grown up around the site.

Honest expectations
In drought years the falls are much reduced and the site looks tired. It is commercialised, with stalls and charged access to some viewpoints. The highway is right there and audible. Paths near the water are slippery.
