The Nevados de Chillan complex has one of the longest ski runs in South America and a season that runs from June to September, and the same volcanic system that built the mountain supplies the thermal springs that the resort has used since the nineteenth century - skiing and bathing on the same heat source. The complex has been in a long eruptive cycle since 2016, with dome growth, explosions and ash emissions that have repeatedly raised the alert level and closed parts of the mountain. In summer the valley at Las Trancas is a base for walking, riding and access to the Nevados sector of the biosphere reserve.
What you actually see
- One of South America's longest runs - on a June to September season.
- Springs from the same volcanic heat - used since the nineteenth century.
- An eruptive cycle since 2016 - with closures when the alert rises.
- Summer walking from Las Trancas - the valley below the resort.
When to go
June to September for skiing; December to March for walking. Several days.
Honest expectations
Volcanic activity closes sectors and sometimes the whole mountain - check the alert level before booking. The road needs chains in winter. Prices are high and packages are usual. Cloud and storms shut lifts often.
Nearby
Chillan is west; the Itata valley is north-west.
