Quinchamali

The potters of Quinchamali work black: local clay shaped without a wheel, burnished with a stone, incised with white lines, and fired in an open pit with the smoke reducing the surface to a deep matt black. The work is done almost entirely by women, taught mother to daughter, and the pieces are figurative - the guitarrera, a woman playing a guitar, is the emblematic form. In 2022 UNESCO inscribed the pottery of Quinchamali and Santa Cruz de Cuca on its list of intangible heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, because the number of working potters has fallen sharply and few younger women are taking it up.
