Chile is one of the great wine-producing nations of the New World, and its sun-drenched central valleys, blessed with an ideal climate and protected between the Andes and the Pacific, produce excellent wines at every level. From the bold Cabernets of the Maipo valley near Santiago to the Carmenere, Chile's signature grape, and the coastal whites of Casablanca, its historic and modern estates welcome visitors for tastings, tours and fine food against a spectacular mountain backdrop.

What you actually see

  • The Maipo valley - the classic Cabernet region near Santiago.
  • Colchagua - the scenic valley of grand estates and a wine train.
  • Carmenere - the tasting of Chile's signature grape.
  • The Casablanca valley - the cool-climate whites near the coast.

When to go

October to April for the warmest weather and the vines in leaf; March and April bring the grape harvest and its festivals. Plan a driver or an organised tour, as tastings and driving do not mix.

Honest expectations

The valleys are spread out, so a driver or an organised tour is needed to visit several estates, as drink-driving is dangerous and illegal. The bigger, famous wineries can feel corporate, while smaller boutique estates offer a more personal experience. It is excellent value and easily combined with Santiago and the coast.

Nearby

Santiago and Valparaiso are close; the central valleys stretch south.
