Mendoza Wine Country

Mendoza is the heart of Argentine wine, a sun-drenched region of vineyards spreading across high desert plains at the foot of the snow-capped Andes. It is above all the home of Malbec, the bold, dark red that has become Argentina's signature wine, and its many bodegas, from grand estates to boutique wineries, offer tastings and superb food paired with spectacular mountain views, in the shadow of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas.

When to go

Spring to autumn, September to April, for the warmest weather and the vines in leaf; March brings the grape harvest and its festival. Plan a driver, tour or bike, as tastings and driving do not mix.

Honest expectations

The wineries are spread across several zones, so a driver, organised tour or a guided bike trip is needed to visit several, as drink-driving is dangerous and illegal. Tastings and estate lunches book up, so reserve ahead. It is excellent value by international standards, and rewards a slow day or two.
