Mosel Wine Region

The Mosel loops through its slate gorge in extravagant hairpins, and up both walls climb the vineyards - Germany's oldest wine landscape, worked since the Romans ruled from Trier, and home to Rieslings that turn steepness into nerve and perfume. The Calmont above Bremm is the exhibit: reputedly Europe's steepest vineyard, pitched to around 65 degrees in places, its vines reached by ladders, monorack rails and a via ferrata that threads the terraces for walkers with steady heads. Downstream, the wine villages do the soft focus - Bernkastel-Kues around its half-timbered Marktplatz, Cochem beneath the turrets of the Reichsburg - while viewpoints above the river bends serve the classic loop panoramas. Autumn brings harvest and a relay of village wine festivals; winery tasting rooms pour by the glass year-round, and the slate that cooks the grapes by day radiates the story back every evening.

When to go

May to October is the valley in leaf and festival; September-October adds harvest bustle and golden vines. Winter is closed-shutter quiet - atmospheric, but many tasting rooms rest.

Before you go

The Calmont route is genuinely exposed - proper shoes, no vertigo, and skip it in rain. Festivals book villages solid, so reserve beds early. Tastings and driving do not mix; the rail line and river ferries are the honest solution.
