Angelmo Market

Angelmo is the working market of Puerto Montt, strung along the shore where the fishing boats land: stalls of shellfish - machas, choritos, picorocos, locos - alongside congrio and salmon, with dried seaweed and smoked mussels sold in strings, and a row of small cooking stalls upstairs where the curanto en olla and caldillo de congrio are made from what is on the counters below. Sea lions lie on the pontoons under the stalls waiting for offcuts. A craft market alongside sells wool, knitwear and Chiloe basketry. The whole thing is a working market first and a visitor stop second.

Honest expectations

It is crowded, wet underfoot and smells strongly of fish - which is what it is. Prices in the visible stalls are higher than in the back rows. Feeding the sea lions is discouraged. Cash is easier than cards.
