Mongo is the main town of the Guéra, the region of central Chad where granite inselbergs rise abruptly out of the plain in domes and clusters, some of them several hundred metres high, and the country around it is scattered with them. The Hadjaray peoples live among the massifs and keep traditional shrines on and around the rocks. The town itself is a market and administrative centre on the road east.

When to go
November to February is the cool season. March to May is very hot. The rains from July green the country and make tracks difficult.
Honest expectations
There is little set up for visitors and facilities are basic. Traditional shrine sites on the rocks are not open and permission matters. The road east is long and rough in stretches.
