The Guelta d'Archei

Deep in the Ennedi's sandstone labyrinth, the desert's most celebrated image assembles itself daily: camel caravans file into the Guelta d'Archei's shadowed gorge, hundreds of animals bawling and jostling to water at pools that never fail, their noise echoing off walls stained dark by millennia of the same ritual. In the black water below survive West African crocodiles - a relict population cut off since the green Sahara ended, persisting in this impossible refuge. The classic approach walks over the rim to the viewpoint above the pools, where the scene composes exactly as the photographs promised, only louder.

November to February, the cool season, is expedition weather; caravans water through the dry months on their own schedule - guides time visits for the morning arrivals. The guelta is part of Ennedi journeys, never a standalone hop.
