Taroko Gorge

Taroko Gorge, in the mountains of eastern Taiwan, is the island's most spectacular natural wonder, a breathtaking canyon where the Liwu River has carved a deep, winding gorge through solid marble over millions of years. Its sheer cliffs of grey-and-white marble tower above a rushing turquoise river, and a road and network of trails wind through tunnels, past waterfalls, swinging suspension bridges, and shrines and temples clinging to the rock, in a dramatic landscape of raw, vertical beauty.

When to go

October to April, the cooler, drier season, for the most comfortable weather and the safest trails; the summer typhoon and rainy season can bring landslides and closures. Check trail conditions, as some paths require permits or close after rockfalls and earthquakes.

Honest expectations

The gorge is prone to rockfalls, landslides and earthquake damage, so trails and roads frequently close for safety, and a major 2024 earthquake caused significant damage, so check current conditions and closures carefully before visiting. Helmets are provided on some trails for good reason. It is reached from Hualien on the east coast. Its dramatic marble canyon, when accessible, is genuinely spectacular.
