The Chutes de la Mbi lie northwest of Bangui, in the same high country as the Boali falls, where the river drops in a series of steps over granite, spreading out across a wide rock shelf rather than falling in a single column, with forest coming down to the water on both banks. It is one of the falls reachable from the capital in a day. The volume changes a great deal between the wet and dry seasons.

What you actually see

  • The stepped drops - the river falling in stages over the rock.
  • The granite shelf - the wide slab the water spreads across.
  • The forest banks - the trees standing to the water's edge.
  • The seasonal volume - a river that changes greatly through the year.

When to go

December to March is the dry season and the roads are usable. Water volume is highest at the end of the wet season. Access is much harder after rain.

Honest expectations

The track in is rough and often impassable after rain. There are no facilities of any kind at the falls. Local arrangements are needed for access and there is no formal visitor management.

Nearby

Boali and its falls are on the same road toward Bangui, and Bangui is southeast.
