Fundy Trail Parkway

The stretch of Fundy coast between St. Martins and Fundy National Park was one of the last undeveloped coastal wildernesses on the eastern seaboard with no road through it. The parkway was built in stages from 1998 and completed in 2021, running about thirty kilometres along the cliff tops with more than twenty lookouts, a suspension footbridge over the Big Salmon River, beaches reached by stairs and a multi-use trail alongside. Whether the road should have been built at all was argued for years, and the completed route opened access to a coast that had been reachable only on foot.

What you actually see

• The cliff-top lookouts - more than twenty stops above the Bay of Fundy.
• The suspension bridge - a footbridge over the Big Salmon River gorge.
• The beaches - Long Beach and others reached by stairways from the road.
• The tidal range - the bay's extreme tides visible from height.

When to go

May to October; the parkway closes for winter. Fog can obscure the lookouts entirely, particularly in early summer. Autumn colour along the coast is good.

Honest expectations

Closed for the winter season and gates shut in the evening. Fog frequently hides the views the road exists for. Beach access involves long stairways.
