Mount Cameroon

Mount Cameroon, called by locals Mongo ma Ndemi, the Mountain of Greatness, and known historically as the Chariot of the Gods, is the highest peak in West Africa at over 4,000 metres and one of the continent's great mountain challenges. An active volcano rising dramatically almost straight from the Atlantic coast near the town of Buea, it is climbed on a demanding multi-day trek that passes through a remarkable range of zones, from steamy lowland rainforest through montane forest and open grassy moorland to a bare, lunar volcanic summit, rewarding climbers with a profound sense of achievement and, on clear days, sweeping views over the coast and beyond.

When to go

November to March, the drier season, offers the best and safest climbing conditions, as the mountain is one of the wettest places in Africa and the rains make the trek treacherous; even in the dry season, weather can change quickly and the summit is cold. Guides and porters, arranged in Buea, are essential.

Honest expectations

The climb is a serious, strenuous multi-day trek requiring good fitness, proper gear and licensed guides, on an active volcano in a very wet climate; conditions can be tough. For the fit and well-informed, though, summiting the highest peak in West Africa is a genuine and rewarding adventure.
