Mindif Peak

The Dent de Mindif is a plug of hard rock left standing when the softer material around it eroded away, rising abruptly from the flat plain south-east of Maroua as a single tooth of bare stone a couple of hundred metres high, visible from a long distance across country that has almost no relief. Its shape has made it a landmark for as long as people have crossed this plain. Climbers have put routes up it and it has a reputation among rock climbers in the region, though the ordinary visit is to walk to the base and around it. The town of Mindif nearby has a lamido's palace and a market.

When to go

November to February, the cool dry season; from March the heat here is extreme. Half a day from Maroua. Climbing needs equipment and experience.

Before you go

Heat on the plain from March to June is severe and there is no shade. Climbing the rock is technical and not a casual activity.
