Tatul

On a rock outcrop above the village of Tatul in the eastern Rhodopes, the summit has been cut into a truncated pyramid with two sarcophagi carved into its top, along with a niche, steps and channels, and the whole arrangement is understood as a Thracian sanctuary in use from the second millennium BC and rebuilt in later periods, with a medieval fortress and an Ottoman-era tekke added on the same rock. The excavator argued it may be connected with an Orpheus cult, which is contested. The cutting is precise and the shapes are unmistakably worked rather than natural, and the summit gives a view over dry volcanic hills in every direction. It is small, taking under an hour on the rock itself.

When to go

April to October. One to two hours. Mornings and late afternoon for light on the cut surfaces. There is no shade. It combines with Perperikon on a circuit from Kardzhali.

Good to know

It is small and the visit is short. The Orpheus attribution is speculation presented confidently. There is no shade and the rock is hot in summer. Interpretation is limited. The village has no facilities.
