Josiah's Bay on Tortola's northeastern shore takes the winter north swell full on, which makes it the main surf beach in the British Virgin Islands: a beach break that works from December through March and is flat much of the rest of the year. A ruined sugar mill and boiling house stand behind the beach, converted in part into a bar and gallery. Rip currents here are strong and there is no lifeguard.

What you actually see

  • The surf break - the island's main wave, working on winter north swell.
  • The sugar mill ruins - the stone works standing behind the beach.
  • The beach - a wide north shore bay backed by scrub and palms.
  • The winter swell - the north Atlantic swell that makes the break.

When to go

December to March is the surf season on north swell. Summer is generally flat. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Honest expectations

Rip currents at this beach are strong and there is no lifeguard; drownings have happened. The surf is for experienced riders. Facilities are limited to a bar.

Nearby

Long Bay is west, and Road Town is south.
