Flamingos bred on Anegada until hunting removed them entirely in the nineteenth century, and in 1992 a small group was brought back from Bermuda and released on the salt ponds on the island's western side. They bred, and the flock has grown into the hundreds. A viewing platform stands beside the road above the pond, with the birds usually at a distance across the water, so binoculars matter. The ponds also hold waders and stilts.

What you actually see

  • The flamingo flock - the population reintroduced in 1992 and now in the hundreds.
  • The viewing platform - the built vantage above the pond beside the road.
  • The salt ponds - the shallow water system the birds feed in.
  • The other waders - the stilts and shorebirds sharing the ponds.

When to go

December to May is the dry season. Birds are usually present year round. Early morning and late afternoon are best for light.

Honest expectations

The birds are usually far out across the pond and binoculars are essential. Approaching them is prohibited and disturbance is a real concern. The platform is the only viewing point.

Nearby

Loblolly Bay is north, and The Settlement is south.
