Museum of Tomorrow

The Museu do Amanha opened in 2015 as the centrepiece of the port regeneration before the Olympics, designed by Santiago Calatrava with a long white cantilever over the water and moving louvres on the roof; it draws water from the bay for cooling and generates part of its power from solar. It holds almost no objects. The exhibition is a sequence of immersive rooms on cosmology, the earth, human systems and the choices ahead, built around data visualisation and film, and its subject is climate and sustainability rather than any collection. Outside, the same regeneration exposed the Valongo Wharf, the landing point for enormous numbers of enslaved Africans, which is a World Heritage site in its own right a short walk away.

All year, closed Mondays. Two hours.

Honest expectations

Tickets are timed and queues form at weekends. The content is presentation rather than collection, which disappoints visitors expecting a science museum with exhibits. Almost everything is in Portuguese with partial English. The square outside is quiet at night.
