Bonito sits in a limestone landscape in Mato Grosso do Sul where the rivers run astonishingly clear, filtered through the rock until the water is like glass, and the town has built a carefully managed eco-tourism model around them. The signature experience is floating and snorkelling down spring-fed rivers such as the Rio da Prata, drifting with shoals of fish through submerged forests in visibility that seems to have no limit. Nearby, the Gruta do Lago Azul is a huge cavern whose floor is a lake lit an intense blue where the daylight reaches it, and other caves, waterfalls and natural pools ring the town. To protect the clarity of the water, numbers at each site are capped and almost everything must be booked ahead with a licensed operator, which keeps it pristine. It is a place to get in the water rather than to sightsee.

What you actually see

  • Gruta do Lago Azul - the great cavern with its intensely blue underground lake.
  • Rio da Prata - snorkelling the glass-clear spring river among shoals of fish.
  • Rio Sucuri - another crystalline float trip through submerged vegetation.
  • The waterfalls and natural pools - the swimming spots and estâncias around the town.

When to go

March to October is drier with the clearest water; heavy rain can cloud the rivers and the blue of the cave lake is strongest when the sun angle is right, roughly the middle of the day and the drier months. Everything is capped and booked, so plan the trip in advance.

Honest expectations

Bonito is not cheap or spontaneous: each attraction is separately ticketed, numbers are strictly limited to protect the water, and most require booking days ahead through an agency, often with a mandatory guide. It is a long drive from Campo Grande. Water clarity depends on recent rain, so a wet spell can genuinely diminish the experience. The model is deliberate and it is why the rivers stay so clear.

Nearby

The southern Pantanal wetlands are within reach for wildlife; Campo Grande is the gateway city.
