Zaslavl

Zaslavl is one of the oldest settlements in the country, recorded from the tenth century and tied by chronicle tradition to Rogneda and her son Izyaslav. What survives above ground is later: the earth ramparts of the sixteenth-century bastioned fortification, substantial and walkable, enclosing the Transfiguration church, a Calvinist prayer house of the 1570s built as a tower with defensive features and later converted to Orthodox use. A Catholic church of 1774 stands nearby. The town holds a museum reserve with several small open-air collections, including a working steam mill and a group of relocated wooden buildings, and it sits beside the Minsk Sea reservoir.

History

By the chronicles Vladimir the Great founded the town in 985, sending his wife Rogneda to live here with their son Izyaslav, founder of the princely house of Polotsk, and the town was named Izyaslavl after him, the origin of Zaslawye. In the early Middle Ages it was the centre of the Principality of Izyaslavl and was heavily fortified in the 11th century, much of its ground now protected for archaeology; in the Reformation it became a centre for Calvinists and Socinians, and in 1793 it passed to the Russian Empire (Wikipedia, Zaslawye).

When to go

May to September for the ramparts and the open-air museums; winter hours are reduced. Weekdays are quiet; the reservoir shore fills at summer weekends. Suburban trains run frequently from Minsk.

What to expect

The museums are small and scattered around the town, each with its own ticket. Labelling is in Belarusian and Russian. The church keeps service hours. Little of the ancient settlement is visible.
