The church of St Michael at Synkavichy, built around the turn of the sixteenth century, is a defensive church, a type found in this region and nowhere much else: a rectangular Orthodox church with round towers at all four corners, walls up to a metre and a half thick pierced with gun loops, machicolations under the eaves and a defensible upper level reached by a stair in a tower, combined with Gothic vaulting and stepped gables in the body of the building. It was designed to hold a local population under attack as much as to hold services. It has been in use through most of its history and is now an active Orthodox church, restored in recent decades.

What you actually see

  • The corner towers - the four round towers of the defensive plan.
  • Gun loops and machicolations - the fortification worked into the walls.
  • Gothic vaulting - the ribbed vaults of the interior.
  • The stepped gables - the late Gothic roof ends.

When to go

May to September for the approach; the church is open around service times and it is worth arriving when someone is present. Morning light suits the whitewashed walls. Sunday services fill it.

Honest expectations

Interior access depends on services or on finding a keyholder. The building is small and the visit under an hour. The village has no facilities. It is a considerable drive from Grodno or Minsk.

Nearby

Muravanka lies northeast; Slonim is east.
