Grodno

Grodno kept what the twentieth century took from most of the region: a walkable historic fabric where the Old and New castles crown the Neman bluff, the twelfth-century Kalozha church - its walls inset with polished stones and ceramic crosses - survives as one of Eastern Europe's oldest, and the centre's baroque runs from the Jesuit cathedral's gilded theatre of an altar to pastel merchant streets made for evening strolling. Pharmacy and history museums fill the old ensembles, the river park curves below the castles, and the city's border-crossroads story reads in every architectural accent.

Background

Grodno, or Hrodna, stands on the Neman River 300 kilometres from Minsk, about 15 kilometres from the Polish border and 30 kilometres from the Lithuanian one, and it is among the oldest cities in Belarus. It was founded in 1127 as a small fortress and trading post, received its town charter in 1441 and became one of the royal residences of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and a centre of trade and culture. Today it is the administrative centre of Grodno Region, with 363,718 people in 2025, and remains a centre of Roman Catholicism and Polish culture in Belarus.
