Grodno

Grodno kept what the twentieth century took from most of the region: a walkable historic fabric where the Old and New castles crown the Neman bluff, the twelfth-century Kalozha church - its walls inset with polished stones and ceramic crosses - survives as one of Eastern Europe's oldest, and the centre's baroque runs from the Jesuit cathedral's gilded theatre of an altar to pastel merchant streets made for evening strolling. Pharmacy and history museums fill the old ensembles, the river park curves below the castles, and the city's border-crossroads story reads in every architectural accent.
