The church of the Nativity of the Virgin at Muravanka, usually dated to 1524, is the counterpart to Synkavichy: the same type of fortified Orthodox church with four round corner towers, thick walls with gun loops, a defensible attic and Gothic ribbed vaults inside, built when this frontier region needed its churches to double as refuges. It was damaged in the seventeenth-century wars and rebuilt in the nineteenth with the addition of a rendered finish and some alteration to the towers, so the profile is slightly softened compared with Synkavichy. It stands in open country outside the village and remains a working church.

What you actually see

  • The four towers - the round corner structures of the defensive plan.
  • Thick walls and loops - the fortification of the church body.
  • Gothic vaults - the ribbed vaulting of the interior.
  • The open setting - the church standing outside the village.

When to go

May to September for the approach; interior access follows service times. Morning and evening light suit the whitewashed exterior. It combines with Synkavichy on the same trip.

Honest expectations

Interior access depends on services or finding a keyholder. Nineteenth-century alterations changed the original appearance. The building is small and the visit brief. There are no facilities.

Nearby

Synkavichy lies southwest; Shchuchyn is northwest.
